Africa’s Travel Indaba 2025: GTA’s Vibrant Showcase

Africa’s Travel Indaba 2025 may have wrapped up, but its impact continues to resonate – especially for the Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA), which made an unforgettable impression at this year’s event held from 12–15 May at the Durban International Convention Centre (ICC).

Under the compelling theme “Unlimited Africa”, and flying the proudly local flag of #VisitGauteng – Zwakala, GTA brought to life a rich and diverse tourism showcase. From heritage and adventure to music and sports tourism, Gauteng’s presence was bold, inclusive, and truly representative of the province’s world-class offerings.

A Global Stage, a Local Voice

Africa’s Travel Indaba is one of the world’s most significant tourism marketing events, attracting over 690 buyers and stakeholders from across Africa and around the globe. For GTA, it was more than a trade show – it was a platform to tell Gauteng’s story, inspire travel, and build strategic partnerships for tourism growth.

The Gauteng Pavilion stood out with immersive experiences featuring:

  • Promotions of major events like the Ultra Music Festival, Soweto Derby, and FIFA Club World Cup.
  • A dedicated spotlight on Gauteng’s heritage tourism, including the Mandela World Heritage Sites Legacy Series and Story of Origin initiative.
  • Interactive content and distribution of the What’s On G Digital Magazine, keeping visitors in the loop on the province’s hottest events and travel itineraries.

Driving Transformation Through SMMEs

A major highlight of GTA’s showcase was its strong commitment to Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs). As part of its broader Township Economic Development Programme, GTA brought a curated group of SMMEs to the Indaba to:

Partnering for Greater Impact: Meet the Co-Exhibitors

GTA’s success at the Indaba was amplified through collaboration with some of Gauteng’s most prominent tourism partners. These co-exhibitors enriched the overall experience, each bringing a unique story and value to the provincial showcase.

Co-Exhibitors Included:

  • Maropeng
  • Constitution Hill
  • Gautrain
  • Freedom Park
  • Mogale City
  • City of Ekurhuleni
  • Sedibeng District Municipality

Together, they showcased Gauteng’s culture, heritage, connectivity, and creativity – driving home the message that Gauteng is more than a gateway – it’s a destination.

Thought Leadership & Inspiring Conversations

GTA also contributed meaningfully to key panel discussions during the Indaba:

1. Sports, Arts and Wellness Panel (13 May)

Explored how sport, music and broadcasting drive destination awareness and tourism demand, featuring GTA CEO Sthembiso Dlamini and other notable industry leaders.

2. Mandela World Heritage Sites & Story of Origin Panel (15 May)

Delved into how Gauteng’s heritage spaces can catalyze tourism development and urban regeneration.

These sessions reinforced Gauteng’s leadership role in leveraging tourism for transformation, identity, and economic inclusion.

What’s Next for Gauteng Tourism?

As the world looks toward South Africa for the upcoming G20 World Leaders Summit, Gauteng is ready. ATI 2025 served as a strong launchpad to promote the province’s G20 Host City Region itineraries, showcase readiness, and attract new global travellers and investors.

From township tours and culinary adventures to mega-events and heritage trails – Gauteng is set to welcome the world with open arms.

Zwakala – #VisitGauteng

Africa’s Travel Indaba 2025 proved that Gauteng isn’t just a stopover; it’s a thriving, authentic, and exciting destination. Through innovative storytelling, empowering local businesses, and building strong partnerships, GTA is shaping the future of tourism – one experience at a time.
