Ephraim Batana and Caroline Kinini Tshabalala (née Ngcobo) were renowned entrepreneurs and respected community leaders. From the 1940’s, they built thriving retail and service businesses, enriching the local economy.

In 1969, they established Eyethu Cinema, a modernist, state-of-the art, two-tier venue with 1,400 seats, becoming a cultural hub for films, performing arts, and community events.

After closing in the 1990s, Eyethu Cinema’s legacy was revived in 2023 with Eyethu Heritage Hall, preserving their contributions and celebrating the landmark’s enduring impact.
